Waist-to-hip ratio calculator
Waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) is your waist circumference divided by your hip circumference. The WHO links higher WHR to greater cardiometabolic risk: roughly 0.90+ for men and 0.85+ for women signals increased risk.
WHO: increased risk at 0.90+ for men.
The basics
What is Waist-to-Hip Ratio?
Waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) shows where you carry fat — more around the waist (apple shape) is linked to higher cardiometabolic risk than fat around the hips (pear shape). The World Health Organization flags substantially increased risk at about 0.90 for men and 0.85 for women. Measure relaxed, at the narrowest part of the waist and the widest part of the hips.
How to use it
- 1Measure your waist. Measure at the narrowest point, usually just above the navel, relaxed.
- 2Measure your hips. Measure around the widest part of your hips and buttocks.
- 3Read your ratio. Your WHR and risk band are calculated instantly.
FAQ
Waist-to-Hip Ratio Calculator — questions
What is a healthy waist-to-hip ratio?
Below about 0.90 for men and 0.85 for women is considered lower-risk by the WHO. Higher ratios indicate more abdominal fat and greater cardiometabolic risk.
Is waist-to-hip ratio or BMI better?
They measure different things. BMI estimates overall weight status; WHR shows fat distribution, which independently predicts health risk. Using both gives a fuller picture.
