The basics

What is Body Fat?

The US Navy method estimates body fat from circumference measurements. It's far more useful than BMI for tracking composition because it reflects fat specifically. Measure with a tape, relaxed, in centimetres. It's an estimate — trends over time matter more than any single reading.

How to use it

  1. 1
Pick your sex. Formulas differ for men and women (women also use the hip measurement).
  2. 2
Measure. With a tape, measure neck, waist (and hip for women) in centimetres, relaxed.
  3. 3
Read your estimate. Your estimated body-fat percentage and category appear instantly.

FAQ

Body Fat Calculator — questions

How do I measure body fat at home?

The US Navy tape method is the most practical: measure your neck and waist (and hips for women) with a tape, enter them here, and we estimate your body-fat percentage. It's not lab-grade but it's consistent for tracking.

What is a healthy body fat percentage?

Roughly, fit men sit around 10–18% and fit women around 18–25%, with athletes lower. Essential fat is higher for women. Ranges vary by source and age.

How accurate is the Navy body-fat method?

It's a reasonable estimate — typically within a few percent of a DEXA scan for most people — and very useful for tracking change over time when you measure consistently.
