The basics
What is BMI?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is your weight in kilograms divided by the square of your height in metres (kg/m²). It's a fast population-level screen for under- and over-weight, but it can't tell muscle from fat — so a lean, muscular person can read as 'overweight'. Use it as a starting point, not a verdict.
How to use it
- 1Enter your height. Input your height in centimetres.
- 2Enter your weight. Input your current weight in kilograms.
- 3Read your result. Your BMI and weight category are calculated instantly.
FAQ
BMI Calculator — questions
How do I calculate my BMI?
Divide your weight in kilograms by your height in metres squared (kg/m²). For example, 80 kg at 1.78 m is 80 ÷ (1.78 × 1.78) ≈ 25.2. This calculator does it for you instantly.
What is a healthy BMI?
A BMI of 18.5–24.9 is classed as a healthy weight, 25–29.9 as overweight, and 30+ as obese. These are population guidelines, not individual diagnoses.
Is BMI accurate for muscular people?
No — BMI can't distinguish muscle from fat, so very muscular people often read as 'overweight'. For body composition, use a body-fat estimate instead.
