- Chin-up: underhand grip (supinated, palms facing you), hands about shoulder-width. Places the biceps in a mechanically stronger position — most people find their first chin-up rep easier due to greater biceps contribution.

- Kipping (using hip swing for momentum) — valid as a separate skill in CrossFit but not a substitute for a strict rep. Build strict strength first.
- Partial range — chin not clearing the bar at the top, or not fully extending at the bottom. Both limit the training stimulus.
- Shrugging — shoulders rising toward the ears on the way up. Cue "show your armpits" to keep scapulae depressed.
Grip, hand position and bar set-up
- Width: for pull-ups, roughly shoulder-width to just outside. Very wide grip reduces range of motion and increases shoulder stress with little added benefit.
- Grip: full grip (thumb wrapped) is safer and stronger than a false (thumbless) grip for most purposes.
